Double-hung windows have a pair of operating sashes that move up and down to allow ventilation from the top, the bottom, or both. Single hung windows have a lower operating sash for ventilation. Either window is perfect for rooms that face walkways, porches or decks because their sashes do not open outward. Again, the only real difference for you is that they can be raised from the bottom or lowered from the top, with sashes that tilt in for easy cleaning.
Double Hung Window Installation
You’re going to find double-hung windows in just about every home you go into. A double-hung window consists of “top and bottom” upper and lower sashes that slide vertically over each other in separate grooves. Springs, balances, or weather stripping allow the window to remain in place anywhere you want it.
We cannot stress the importance of quality installation services. Could you do it yourself? Sure, you could probably eventually figure it out. But it’s going to take a lot longer, a lot more work, and the chances of installation going as well as it would with us doing it, are low. What’s the difference between double-hung and single-hung windows?
The most significant difference between double-hung and single-hung windows is that with double-hung windows, both the upper and lower windows can move. Only the lower window can move in a single-hung window, while the upper is sealed in place.
Aside from the mechanics of the window, the cost is a major determining factor for most clients. Single-hung windows are less expensive than double-hung windows. Other pros of the single-hung window include lower installation costs, greater energy efficiency, and enhanced security with only one lock.
